Students from the Municipality of Sungurlare already have a copy of the joint manual for nature protection. The project team provided the manuals of School “Hristo Botev” – Sungurlare, School “St. St. Cyril and Methodius ” – Grozden, School“ Hristo Botev ” – Lozarevo, School “St. St. Cyril and Methodius ” – Manolich, School “Vasil Levski ” – Prilep and School “Otets Paisiy ” – Saedinenie.The manual contains information on the protected areas in the municipalities of Sungurlare and Suloglu. The final press conference of the Joint Nature Protection project was held in Suloglu

The final press conference of the project, CB005, was held on September 9, 2021 in Suloglu. CB005. 2.12.116 “Joint Nature Protection”, within the second call for proposals from the Interreg-IPA Bulgaria-Turkey program for cross-border cooperation 2014-2020, where the Presidency of the European Union is the national body.The final meeting in the cultural center of Suloglu municipality was attended by the mayor of Suloglu Mehmet Ormankaran, the mayor of Sungurlare Dr. Georgi Kenov, the project teams, deputy mayors and representatives of the municipal council.All activities carried out within the project were presented by the project coordinator Emek Uslu, accompanied by slides. Both mayors wished to work together in the coming years on various projects and ended the meeting and the project in a friendly manner.


New conservation equipment – mini wheel loader with mulch and drill arrived in Sungurlare

The purchased specialized nature protection equipment arrived in Sungurlare – a mini wheel loader with mulch and drill. The new technique is project CB005.2.12.116 „Joint Nature Protection“, co-funded by the European Union through the Interreg-IPA CBC Bulgaria–Turkey Programme.

In Sungurlare, know-how is being exchanged between Turkish and Bulgarian experts

During the period 23 – 27 August in Sungurlare was held an exchange of know-how for nature protection and afforestation with experts from the Municipality of Suloglu, Republic of Turkey. The visit included: presentation of the project, the project activities and results to the participants with an emphasis on the planned conservation activities in both municipalities. Overview on the exchange of know-how which took place in Suloglu on 02-06 August 2021 – realized activities, achieved results and impact. Presentation of the protected areas in Sungurlare municipality (using the Joint Handbook for Nature Protection, elaborated within the project). Discussion and exchange of know-how, practices, methods and experience by the Bulgarian and Turkish experts on the nature protection and afforestation measures, applied in both municipalities. Visit to all the locations in Sungurlare municipality where the afforestation measures took place within project. Discussion on the process of afforestation, applied in Sungurlare, the equipment used and the staff needed, favorable conditions and found problems, lessons learned, etc.Visit to “Hristo Botev” School where the decorative trees were planted by the winners in the students’ contest within project. Discussion on the held students’ contest, the types of trees planted, the motivation of students to participate in such activities, the experience of the Turkish experts.Placing of 20 wooden houses for birds which nest in the trees, populating natural habitat 91M0, thus contributing for its conservation.Discussion on the topic – the necessity for and the use of the bird houses, different types of bird houses, specific bird types for which the houses are suitable.Visit to the territories where activities for cleaning from bushes that prevent the growing of the vegetation, typical for the designated protected areas, and making the territory favorable for the growing of young plantations which usually flourish there, are planned.The activities are under project CB005.2.12.116 „Joint Nature Protection“, co-funded by the European Union through the Interreg-IPA CBC Bulgaria–Turkey Programme.


A round table on “Nature protection from all” was held in the Municipality of Sungurlare

Activities under project CB005.2.12.116 “Joint Nature Protection”, co-financed by the European Union through the Interreg-IPA Program for cross-border cooperation Bulgaria – Turkey were presented in Sungurlare.
The round table aimed to inform all stakeholders about the environmental damage that can be caused by the daily lives of all people and methods of nature protection, including protected areas in the municipalities of Sungurlare and Suloglu.

Official guests of the event were representatives of Suloglu Municipality, Black Sea Region Basin Directorate, Bulgarian Biodiversity Foundation – Burgas Regional Branch, Prosveta 1882 Community Center – Sungurlare and Sofia University “Hristo Botev” – Sungurlare. The round table presented the results of conservation activities in the municipalities of Sungurlare and Suloglu, conducted within the project, exchange of know-how and best practices in environmental protection and nature with an emphasis on the protection of specific species and natural habitats, as well as and afforestation methods. The moderator of the event was Radostina Tsenova from the Bulgarian Biodiversity Foundation – Burgas Regional Branch.
During the presentation, topics related to soil, water and how to protect the environment were presented. On the territory of Sungurlare municipality there are 14 territories with high conservation value. Eight of them are included in the pan-European network – NATURA 2000, composed of protected areas, aimed at ensuring the long-term survival of the most valuable and endangered species and habitats in Europe. There are two protected areas on the territory of Sungurlare municipality: Lalikoto Protected Area and Orlitsite Protected Area. Lalikoto Protected Area was declared a protected area in 1985 in order to protect the Urum tulip and other rare plants. Urum tulip grows only in Bulgaria, at an altitude of 0 to 1000 meters in dry, mainly calcareous areas, on humus-carbonate and less often cinnamon and eroded soils. Natural landmarks on the territory of Sungurlare municipality – “Koria”, “Blackberry deposit”, “Chiflikova niva” and “Probityat kamak” – Beronovo rock mushroom. In the area there is a natural habitat 91M0 “Balkan-Pannonian Tsero-Gorun forests” and territories in the protected areas of Natura 2000 – “Kotlenska planina” BG0002029 and “Gorna Luda Kamchia” BG0000136.

The event featured flora and fauna in the municipality of Suloglu, which are extremely rich in biodiversity, especially in terms of birds and mammals.

The green area around Suloglu Dam is used as a recreation area by Edirne residents during the summer season. Suloglu Dam and Geckinli Lake contribute to the development of local tourism in the area. After research, 106 different species of birds were found. At the foot of the dam there are old poplar trees and bushes. The most remarkable species in this area is the Imperial Eagle. “Conservation activities” in Suloglu are cleaning the bed and the coastal environment of the Suloglu River; afforestation with seedlings fast-growing willow, ash and sagebrush to prevent erosion.

Information on Nature Conservation and Afforestation exchanged in Süloglu between Turkish and Bulgarian experts

The project information exchange event, CB005.2.12.116 “Joint Conservation of Nature”, was held in Suloglu as part of the second call for proposals under the Interreg-IPA program for cross-border cooperation between Bulgaria and Turkey 2014-2020. where the Presidency of the European Union serves as the national authority.

At the event, the five experts from Bulgaria were accompanied by experts from the Municipality of Suloglu, the Municipality of Edirne and the Regional Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry Suloglu. Contribute to the planting of trees purchased under the project. The afforested areas were visited together with the municipal staff and experts and the condition of the planted trees was examined. The areas with drip irrigation made an impression. In addition, the work of the truck and excavator purchased under the project was monitored, and the cleaning of the riverbed was considered.

After exchanging views on nature conservation and protection of forested areas in Suloglu, they visited Suloglu Dam and the Kovankaya area.

Having received the support of the population, the municipality of Suloglu is taking all measures for protection and development of the forested areas for a greener municipality. This will ensure the continuity of the project.


Excavator and dump truck delivery ceremony in Suloglu Municipality

On 15.06.2021 in the Municipality of Suloglu there is a ceremony for delivery of an excavator and a dump truck within the project “Joint Nature Protection” number CB005.2.12.116 after the second call for proposals for Interreg-IPA Bulgaria – Turkey Cross-border Cooperation Program 2014-2020 ., in which the Presidency of the European Union is a national body.

“Today together we experience a happy and proud day in our municipality. From the first day we set out to serve our people, we said to ourselves, “People first.” We try to participate in all services that will benefit our citizens living in our municipality. The most important thing is to buy vehicles and build buildings for our district and municipality without leaving the municipal budget.

As part of this beautiful project, which we did with the municipality of Sungurlare – Bulgaria, nearly 10,000 saplings were planted and we brought two new vehicles to our municipality. We will both protect our nature and serve the people with the excavator and dump truck we bought. On behalf of the residents of Suloglu Municipality, I would like to thank in the first place the municipal officials and our statesmen who with this project wrote their dreams and put their work and contributed to these projects, the Presidency of the European Union Edirne, Dr. Georgi Kenov Mayor of Sungurlare Municipality – project partner ”.

Working meeting in Sungurlare

A working meeting on project CB005.2.12.116 “Joint nature protection” was held in Sungurlare, during which the progress of its implementation activities was discussed.
The Mayor of Suloglu Municipality, Mr. Mehmed Ormankaran, presented Mr. Georgi Kenov with a gift – a painting made by the children in the Chitalishte of Suloglu. The project is co-funded by the European Union through the Interreg-IPA CBC Bulgaria–Turkey Programme.


40,000 saplings were planted in the Municipality of Sungurlare

In the Municipality of Sungurlare the activities on project CB005.2.12.116 „Joint Nature Protection“, co-funded by the European Union through the Interreg-IPA CBC Bulgaria–Turkey Programme. 40,000 are afforested saplings of Quercus cerris and Quercus Frainettoon an area of ​​60 decares of municipal forest territories.

On Earth Day – April 22 in Sungurlare is an official award ceremony for students. The competition was organized between students from 8 to 12 grade on “Use of the environment and specific protection of protected areas and localities in the Municipality of Sungurlare.”

Mayor Dr. Georgi Kenov awarded each of the finalists in the competition and wished them to continue to be curious, to protect nature and to be an example among their peers, as motivators for creating a better ecological planet.

The event was attended by Deputy Mayors Todorka Pavleva and Gergana Zhelyazkova, the director of School “Hristo Botev” Nikolay Rusev, teachers, the project team, world champion Shaban Mustafa and expert of the department of education Antoaneta Aleksieva.

This activity was parallel both in Secondary school “Hristo Botev” – Sungurlare and in a secondary school located in the town of Suluğlu, Turkey. To project CB005.2.12.116 „Joint Nature Protection“, co-funded by the European Union through the Interreg-IPA CBC Bulgaria–Turkey Programme.


Suloglu Municipality conducts lectures with students

In the period 12, 13, 14 and 19 April the Municipality of Suloglu held lectures at the Center for Public Education, in three classes of primary school students, two groups of high school students and 12th grade students from the multi-program Anatolian High School “Ali Aya”. Currently in the municipality of Suloglu, in parallel with the verification of the lectures, a competition was announced on the topic: “The importance of nature conservation in Suloglu and protection of clean and necessary conditions in the environment”, with the participation of project participants, drawing or collage is extended to 27.04 . 2021 The awarding will take place in the period 28-29.04.2021.


6 trainings for environmental protection were held in the municipality of Sungurlare

The competition for students will be held in Sungurlare and Suluglu

Competition between students from 8 to 12 grade on “Environmental protection and in particular protection of protected areas and areas in the Municipality of Sungurlare.”

Each student will preparing one of the following materials – essay, drawing or collage, in accordance with the theme of the competition. The submission of the materials will be to your class teacher by April 16, 2021.

After an evaluation by a jury, 15 winners will be announced – 3 winners from each class, respectively first, second and third place from 8 grade and so from 9, 10, 11 and 12 grade. All students ranked in the first three places in each class receive special prizes provided by the project.

The final stage is awarding the winners, of which the first five students will have the opportunity to plant trees on Earth Day – April 22. The planted tree will be accompanied by a small information board presenting the name of the tree, the name of the student and the year of the plantation.

In Sungurlare afforestation began with Quercus cerris and Quercus Frainetto

One of the conservation activities proposed in the implementation of the cross-border project CB005.2.12.116 “Joint Nature Protection”, in which the Municipality of Sungurlare is partnering with the Municipality of Suloglu, Turkey, has started.The activity includes the inclusion of a total of 60 decares of municipal forest territories with a 40,000 saplings of Quercus cerris and Quercus Frainetto, characteristic of natural habitat 91M0 Pannonian-Balkanic turkey oak –sessile oak forests.Afforestation events have traditionally started during Forest Week, which is presented in the first week of April each year.The idea of celebrating the afforestation holiday took concrete form in 1925 with the adoption of the eighth Forest Act, when the first afforestation festival was established. The main task of its celebration is voluntary work throughout Bulgaria, which urgently needs afforestation of the bare mountain slopes and landscaping of towns and villages.With the enthusiasm of the foresters and the support of the population, the Feast of Afforestation became Forest Week in 1934. The idea is for foresters from all regions of the country to learn about the importance of forests and afforestation, and the working week of students to turn into a week of afforestation.


Specialized equipment was purchased and delivered to Sungurlare Municipality

Under the project CB005.2.12.116 “Joint nature protection” the following specialized equipment has been purchased and delivered so far: branch crusher and dump truck. Delivery of a mini front loader and mulcher is forthcoming. The specialized equipment will be used in the implementation of the forthcoming activities for afforestation, clearing of forest territories and loosening of the soil in the Municipality of Sungurlare. The afforestation activities are to start in the next few days, as a result of which a total of 60 decares of municipal forest territories will be afforested with saplings of cer and blagun.


Information on future project activities

From the planned activities under project CB005.2.12.116 “Joint protection of nature” the preparation of the joint manual for “Joint protection of nature” has started, which will contain information about protected areas in the municipalities of Sungurlare and Suloglu.In the coming weeks, delivery of specialized equipment for the two municipalities in connection with the planned conservation activities under the project is forthcoming.


Project team meeting in Sungurlare

First CB005.2.12.116 Joint Nature Protection Workshop

In the period 18 – 19.12.2019. The first working meeting was held between Sungurlare Municipality, Republic of Bulgaria (Lead Partner) and Suloglu Municipality, Republic of Turkey, as partners in the implementation of the joint transboundary nature protection project. The meeting was attended by the Mayor of the Suloglu Municipality Mr. Mehmet Ormankaran and his team, the Mayor of the Sungurlare Municipality, Mr. Georgi Kenov, the Secretary of the Sungurlare Municipality Ms. Rositsa Chaneva, the Chairman of the Municipal Council Mr. Khalil Ahmedve, Mr. Ms. Todorka Pavleva and Mr. Dimitar Gavazov and experts from the Sungurlare municipal administration. During the discussion the project activities that will be implemented in the two municipalities within the project, which are environmentally oriented, were discussed. The launching of a press conference on the project will follow, as well as the launching of tendering procedures for the delivery of equipment early next year.
